If you are ever cruising up highway six toward the Chi Cheemaun or a scuba diving, hiking or rockwatching weekend you might have noticed a sign on the side of the highway. “Cheap Smokes”; beside this is a painted wigwam and a tarp-covered shed outside of which stands two near-life-sized aboriginal carvings.
Some of the work can be very artful and I am fascinated by careful soapstone staturary as my sister Melissa carves amazing “peace pipes. The lady who worked the store turned out to be from Kitchener but was living up here – (on the Saugeen land) though I regret now not pursuing her story; the inside of the shed was too amazing a distraction. A huge moose head glared down from the roof and the carvings were detailed and intricate. An antler morphed into an eagle and logs of solid cedar had been worked into various Indian images.
I spoke of another nearby shop that I had stopped at a few weeks ago and the lady proprietor seemed to know the owners. I got the impression that the several venues in this area considered each other as more artists than as retailers, a calling more than a business.
Unable to photograph her wares I was suitably compensated by a picture of this amazing schooner tattoo. It seemed appropriate to our visit as Maggie and I had just spent the day viewing sunken ship wrecks from the glass bottomed “Blue Heron V”.
The Bruce Peninsula is a hikers, divers, amatuer geologists, cavers and general “rockwatchers” paradise. The turquoise waters and bone white rock are too me so very representative of a northern paradise. It is the picture that I carried with me on my world excursions, it was how I idealized the beauty of Ontario in my mind.

Wow. I’m not a tattoo guy but that is a pretty sweet tattoo.
Very nicely done!!! Arty women are awesome too :)Did she tell you the artist?
Wow, that IS amazing. What I bet is even more amazing was the price of that tatoo… They are serious investments…
I am sure the lady will be most flattered to hear the compliments. I knew it was pretty cool as soon as I saw the work, it fit with the many artworks in the shed (I consider some of their works to fine to be just crafts, its individual pieces that someone has obviously taken some time with and employed a great deal of thought on). I had given her my blog adress and she said that she would check it out within the next few days so.., in answer to the artist question, If you read this, Doug would like to know the artist. It is his tattoo’ed leg that you see on my May 8th post.
That’s a nice tat :-) What I like about it is that it is different from the run – of – the – mill tattoos of mythical creatures and butterflies in naughty places. The black theme in clothes shows it off quite nicely. That’s a great picture; you have a nice eye for photography.
Summmer look even more beautiful in person!!!!Strange we know the same people :)
pretty woman
I agree it’s a lovely tattoo, but just wanted to point out that it’s not a schooner. Schooners’ sails are fore-and-aft rigged; the ship pictured here is square rigged. This is generically known as a full-rigged ship.
To long and wordy – nobody would know what I was talking about – except real sailors of which I am not. Would pirate ship be a suitable description?
lol i actually met this girl while i was in tobomory, nice girl lol had dinner with her my friend my brother and my sister it was a good night :P
It’s a small world.
The artist Scott Duncan who owns Sugar Shack tattoo in Kincardine..remember she knew Scott’s brother.

I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having difficulty finding one?
Thanks a lot!
