Does this look haunted, it should do, its an old abandoned headframe that I visited one night. It is too unstable to enter. The internal beams have been rotting away for the last 100 years, the tin peels off like flaking skin.
This is one of the first structures that you see as you enter the town of Cobalt. It sits right beside the "Glory Hole", a deep, water-filled pit at the edge of the community.
As Doug Shearer, my local guide told me, "Everything around here remains largely untouched". This discovery of old mining artefacts makes the place unique. It is raw living history- seen nowhere else. Whereas in most mining towns the infrastructure is torn away as soon as it stops producing but it has not happened here. There are still four standing headframes in the town, one of which is now incorporated into the "Silver Street Cafe". They had once stored their perishables down in the bottom of it's shaft. It remains permenantly cool down there.
