It is a well known fact that 90-95% of Ontario’s caves are within 100 feet of a road. As of late we have taken to exploration in dense tracts of forest over a karst terrain that has been long suspected to harbor the best caving possibilities in Ontario.
As a rough guide we have been using an old manuscript that was produced by Martin Davis, he had already visited the area andf for the most part his initial reconnaisance has been invaluable to our success in finding, or re-finding significant karst features. we believe this shaft was first marked on one of Martin’s maps and in looking down it appears to exceed the depth of the abyssthat we found last month and also several other cave shaft features that we had recently happened upon. Most exciting about this shaft is the belling out of the bottom reaches so that we cannot see the bottom of the wall beneath where Jeff is standing – in fact we are believing that it could be a tunnel as a surface joint also leads in that direction. We are intending to descend the pit this coming weekend and answer the question as to whether there is going cave tunnel at the bottom.
Check out this video of the cave shaft and also another feature that we are calling the void – cave shaft video here.

Hi Mick,
The sound of water flowing and falling is very encouraging!
Did you know if the area had much rain the days before you were there?
Is that garbage I can see on the edges in the still picture of the pit?
I hope there isn’t to much garbage to dig out?
Do you think one 10m cable ladder will get you on the floor?
If it’s deeper you may just want to do SRT frog.
Make sure everyone is on belayed when on the ladder! Seat harness, you could tie with webbing, would also be a very good idea too.
How were the bugs, any better?
Greg
Cant really see the bottom clearly, there is certainly some garbage down there as I could just vaguely see white specs. Yes there had been rain earlier in the week. I would not imagine the pit goes more than about 30 feet at the one end, but it gets deeper where you can see Jeff standing. Bugs were not bad at all.
first time i read your blog and what you discover is amazing! Did you went down the sinkhole 30ft below??? Where is located in ontario? If is near province of quebec ill grap my vertical stuff and i would like to go down to see exactly what is inside!
Bastien
I am just making a video of this shaft tonight and I should have it posted tomorrow. Are you a Quebec caver? The shaft is not near the border with Quebec, but there are some Quebec cavers that sometimes come up around here for caving (Niebelungen cave club – Ottawa/Hull area).
suberb!!! and yes im a quebec caver, proud member of the SQS!!!Just live 30 min from hawksbury. Can’t wait to watch that movie youll post tonight. Tks
