Cool! Those are cute little guys. I’ve built bat houses before, but I don’t have one hanging right now. I do know of a good bat area south of Rochester.
Received word from an E.R. nurse who just received a patient who was cycling and struck a bat on his bare chest and was bitten. The B.C. Health Authority treats all bat bites in British Columbia as though the bat was rabid. Scary concept, as the treatment for a rabies bite is extreme and prolonged.. so please be careful when in proximity to bats, as cute as they are.
Fred, Bats can get rabies like any other mammal.
and die from it, they are not carriers.
Bats aren’t usually rabid, but to be safe I’m sure the health
Authority whated to treat, because if you show the symtoms
of rabies it’s to late to treat, and is fatal!
Bats usually try to stay away from us, so a bat that is on the ground or doing unusual thing, like not staying clear of us, mit be
sick.
The treatment isn’t like it once was, only a few shots in the
arm now. Not thow the stumic into the spin like it once was,
when they first had a treatment.
Before they had a treatment getting bitten by a rabid animal
was a terable drawn out way to die.
In Ontario if you get bitten
the vaccinations are payed for free. If you are going to
handle wild animals the vaccination will cost you.
So if you get bitten by anything you show seek treatment right
away! cats and dogs also have nasty bactieria in there mouths.
There was one and only one, case I heard of of a woman how had developed rabis. They treated her and also put her into a coma
and she did survive. This is the first and only time this
happend. I don’t now if there were any lasting effects?
Please don’t let bats freak you out. I like them. There kind of
cout and cuddle don’t you think. I’ve been near lot at a time,
in caves and outside when there are eating all the insects that
are trying to eat me. Remember some mosketos have
west nile virus. And who really like to get bitten anyway.
Bats help keep the planet form being over run with flying bugs!
CaveSafe, Greg.
