What on earth is this?

At the edge of a sunny marsh, in amongst the lavender blooms of the everpresent purple loosestrife Chris spotted a shiny black tail peeking out from amongst the rocks. Further investigation revealled this little fellow. He was hiding in a crevice keeping quiet and deathly still. At what point it dawned upon him that he was being observed I am not sure. We watched him until he tired of our attentions. Backing out he stumbled past us with a rubbery gait. I think he must have damaged his front feet somehow. Nature is pretty harsh and it was not for us to intervene on his behalf but we could’nt help but wish him well.
Anybody know what this furry little critter is?

I would guess he is either a mink or weasel. Nice shot. Beautiful animal.
