Pictures of a Sandstone Mine Near Niagara Falls
April 19, 2006 by rockwatching

Here are a couple of pictures that I had taken in a sandstone mine near Niagara Falls. I had long been interested in finding tunels of this nature as sandstone mining was once quite big around here. Today very little is left to indicate the existance of such an enterprise. Jeff Mirza and I had searched around Belfountain last year but we were unsuccessful. It was not until Dan e mailed me last month that my dream was realized.
The tunnels go on well beyond where we had managed to wade, becoming progressively more difficult to navigate due to the deep mud. The water had this amazing green colour in places and elsewhere it was crystal clear. I am the guy with the red helmet and that is Dan in the dark helmet.
